Driver Who Hit Mom, Daughters In Salem Heading To Prison
Dexter Mitchell, 54, of Gloucester, accepted a plea deal a week after a judge said he wanted to see him serve jail time.

SALEM, MA -- The Gloucester man who hit a mom and her two daughters as they crossed Bridge Street in Salem on the day before Halloween in 2016 will serve prison time after pleading guilty Monday to drunken driving and other charges. A Salem District Court judge sentenced Dexter Mitchell, 54, of Gloucester, to 2 1/2 years in jail with nine months to be served, probation and community service.
According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, Mitchell was allegedly drunk when he struck the family as they crossed Bridge Street on October 30, 2016. He hesitated a moment before driving away. He returned to the scene after dumping out beer in a dumpster behind a nearby apartment complex. One of the two girls was unable to walk and has undergone multiple surgeries since the crash.
Last week a judge in the case said he wanted Mitchell to serve time in prison, even if he agreed to plead guilty.
