How To Find Salem's Pop-Up Restaurants

You won't find these restaurants in Zagat's guide or taking reservations on Open Table, but your taste buds will thank you for the effort.

SALEM, MA -- Greater Boston is fully hooked on the pop-up restaurant craze, and at least two make regular appearances in Salem. Pop-up are temporary restaurants and snack stands; some owners just do it to fulfill a nagging culinary dream, while others go on to find permanent locations.

Eater Boston recently published a guide to finding pop-ups in the Boston area for a snack or, in some cases a full meal, and there were two entries from Salem: Goodnight Fatty and Back Alley Bacon.

Before finding it regular location in Higginson Square, Goodnight Fatty was offering chunky cookies on Friday and Saturday nights at coffee shops and breweries in Salem. Now you can find owners Erik Sayce and Jennifer Pullen selling their cookies between 7 pm and 11 pm on Friday and Saturday nights at the same location every week. They also take requests to pop-up at a location near you. For details, see Goodnight Fatty's Facebook page.

You'll need to know the code word and see the red light turned illuminated on Liberty Street before you can sample whatever pork-based dish the chefs behind this operation have dreamed up for the week. Prices are usually $11, cash only and exact change required. Here's some hints: the code word is posted ahead of time on social media and the pop-up operates on Wednesday nights. Follow Back Alley Bacon's Facebook page for hours, code word and other details.
