North Shore Blizzard 2026: Peabody, Swampscott Lift Parking Bans, Salem Select Street Bans Extended

Schools remained closed a second day on Tuesday as crews attempted to clear roads and sidewalks from wind-swept snow.

SALEM, MA — Students enjoyed a second day of extended school vacation on Tuesday, while a parking ban remained in effect in Salem as it was lifted in neighboring North Shore communities, as the region looked to dig out of the blizzard of 2026.

Up to a foot or more of snow, with 60 mph+ winds causing widespread damage, hammered Essex County on Monday — closing schools, municipal offices, libraries, senior centers and causing trash collection delays.

Snow emergency parking bans were rescinded in Peabody, Swampscott and Marblehead on Tuesday morning, while the ban continued on select streets in Salem.

"Parking ban remains in effect as DPW clean-up efforts continue today," Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo said on Tuesday morning. "Announcements coming later today about any changes to parking restrictions and traffic patterns.

"Please help by starting to clear nearby sidewalks, crosswalk ramps, and hydrants of snow, but take your time and stay safe! Be sure to clear any vents on your house and check on vulnerable neighbors."

Beverly municipal offices reopened as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Salem municipal offices remained closed on Tuesday.

Most cities and towns implemented a one-day delay in trash and recycling collection with Tuesday collections taking place on Wednesday, and Friday collections occurring on Saturday this week.

The North Shore was spared some of the highest snow totals across the state — with areas of the South Coast getting blasted with more than three feet of snow.

Here are the top Essex County totals, according to the National Weather Service:

  • 22.0 inches — Gloucester
  • 21.0 inches — Andover
  • 16.6 inches — Marblehead
  • 14.5 inches — Ipswich
  • 11.5 inches — Lynnfield
  • 11.2 inches — Danvers
  • 11.0 inches — Rockport
  • 11.0 inches — Newburyport

Tuesday will be a good day to begin cleanup with sunny and cold conditions and a high of 30 degrees.

Wednesday brings another shot of snow — but this will be much less impactful — with 1 to 3 inches expected across the state starting at mid-morning and lasting into the afternoon.

There will be a warm-up to follow and assist in some melting with highs in the 40s on both Saturday and Sunday.
