Salem State First-Year Students Volunteer Across 6 North Shore Communities (patch.com) — Incoming Salem State University first-year students kicked off their college careers by volunteering on 22 community projects across six North Shore communities, with several focused directly in Salem. Students supported local groups like Mental Makeover, Lifebridge North Shore, NAGLY and the Sarah Parker Remond School, underscoring the university's emphasis on civic engagement as a core part of campus life.
   

2. Salem Sound Coastwatch Awarded $30K To Help Build Witch City Tree Canopy (patch.com) — Salem residents could see more shade and greenery after Salem Sound Coastwatch received a $30,000 state grant to boost the city's tree canopy. The group will work with neighbors and businesses to recruit sites for free trees, remove pavement where possible, and pinpoint priority planting areas in partnership with state conservation officials.
   

3. Salem To See Rolling Roadblocks During North Shore Runfest (patch.com) — Drivers in Salem should prepare for rolling roadblocks on Sunday morning as the North Shore Runfest winds through downtown, waterfront, and Point neighborhood streets starting at 9 a.m. The race route loops from Congress Street through Lafayette, Derby, Fort Avenue, and Washington Square before returning to the Harbor Walk area, with traffic impacts shifting as runners move along the course.
   

4. Salem Author Takes A Dog's Eye View Of Witch City History (patch.com) — Salem dog lovers are invited to a Sept. 5 harbor cruise and book launch celebrating local author Julie Gordon's new history of the city told through its dogs. The event aboard the Hannah Glover will feature live music, dog-friendly activities, and a signing of "Tails of Salem," which explores nearly 400 years of Salem stories through canine companions.
   

5. License Plate Tracking Debate Rages Across MA As Cities, Towns Turn Off Cameras (patch.com) — Salem has ended its contract with Flock license plate cameras over data control concerns, even as officials credit the technology with helping solve major local crimes from bombings to shootings and rapes. City leaders plan to replace Flock with systems that keep data under tighter local control, while privacy advocates push Salem and nearby communities to reconsider ALPR surveillance altogether.
