Attempted Purse-Snatching Reported on Congress Street

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's log:
- At 5:39 p.m., police executed a search warrant on Palmer Street. Raymond A. Garland, 42, of 12 Palmer St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant. Minnie E. Hartwell, 46, of 21 Leavitt St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
- At 7:16 p.m., a Chestnut Street woman called police to report that a package had been stolen off of her front porch.
- At 7:20 p.m., police responded to a past road rage incident on Canal Street.
- At 7:48 p.m., police and fire units responded to a vehicle fire near the intersection of Essex and North streets.
- At 9:45 p.m., police responded to the area of Arge's Liquors for a report of a woman chasing another woman around with a baseball bat. The baseball bat turned out to be just a can and the women were reportedly arguing over $8.
- At 10:06 p.m., police responded to a report of a skateboarding using the travel lane on Highland Avenue.
- At 12:39 a.m., police responded to a dispute over a taxi fare on Buffum Street.
- At 1:33 a.m., police responded to a report of two men checking car doors on Ocean Avenue. Jeremy T. Ray, 25, of 31 Salem St., Salem, was arrested on two counts of attempting to commit a crime.
- At 7:42 a.m., police responded to a reported dispute with a crossing guard near the intersection of Broad Street and Dalton Parkway.
- At 8:50 a.m., a Forrester Street woman called police to report that a moped had been stolen out of her backyard.
- At 9:03 a.m., police responded to a dispute at the Dunkin' Donuts on Canal Street.
- At 9:56 a.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered at the intersection of Washington and Dodge streets.
- At 11:11 a.m., police responded to a shoplifting incident at the Shaw's on Traders Way. Ellen M. Petrilli, 52, of 15 Magnolia Ave., Magnolia, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting merchandise by asportation.
- At 11:12 a.m., a hypodermic needle was discovered on Marlborough Road.
- At 11:18 a.m., a Meadow Street woman called police to report that her vehicle was broken into overnight and items were missing.
- At 12:51 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highland Avenue. Joseph W. Dunton, 41, of 113 Weatherly Drive, Salem, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
- At 2:20 p.m., police made an arrest on Dow Street. John N. Diaz, 20, of 11 Harbor St., Salem, was arrested on two counts of intimidating a witness and two counts of threatening to commit a crime. Eric N. Rentas, 25, of 3 Roslyn Ct., Salem, was arrested on two counts of threatening to commit a crime and two counts of intimidating a witness.
- At 2:41 p.m., police responded to a disturbance on New Derby Street. Phillip Dana, 58, of 26 New Derby St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct.
- At 3:05 p.m., police responded to a report of kids with a BB gun on Ward Street.
- At 3:31 p.m., police responded to a fire in a dental lab on Essex Street.
- At 6:07 p.m., police responded to a purse-snatching attempt on Congress Street.
- 7:20 p.m., police made an arrest on Margin Street. Lawrence A. DeCosta, 54, of 56 Margin St., Salem, was arrested for reportedly having an outstanding warrant.
