Salem Seeks Neighborhood Helpers Amid Coronavirus Vaccine Rollout

Ambassadors receive a stipend to help residents secure coronavirus vaccines, help with vaccine hesitancy and assist with other services.

SALEM, MA — Salem is looking to hire a group of "Neighborhood Ambassadors" to help residents gain access to the coronavirus vaccine and other city services.

The city launched the effort Wednesday, which will training ambassadors to directly engage and assist neighbors in promoting vaccines and accessing resources needed as the city endures and recovers from the health crisis.

Salem resident and Neighborhood Ambassador Coordinator Benjamin Shallop will work directly with the ambassadors to develop and outreach program to help those who want a vaccine find one, and help those who might be vaccine-hesitant feel more comfortable getting one.

"While it appears that the vast majority of Salem residents want to be vaccinated, some residents may have accessibility issues that make getting an appointment for a vaccine more difficult," Shallop said. "We want to make sure that everyone that wants to get a vaccine can get a vaccine while also promoting a culture of vaccine positivity in the community. We want to encourage those who may have felt some hesitancy about the vaccine that it is safe, effective, and that getting vaccinated is the best way to protect themselves, their family, and their community from COVID-19."

Ambassadors will also help those in their neighborhoods become aware of and sign up for housing, food, job placement and training programs.

"The ideal neighborhood ambassador is someone who cares a great deal for their neighbors and neighborhood, has a strong desire to do good, has two or three hours a week to spare, and most importantly is willing to listen to and engage with their neighbors," Shallop said. "The role of the neighborhood ambassador is to help the city engage their neighbors around vaccines, assistance, and services."

Neighborhood Ambassadors will receive a monthly stipend.

Those interested should send their resumes to bshallop@salem.com or apply through the city's website here.
