See What Salem Streets Are Set To Close This Halloween Season

The city has determined several road closures for Halloween events with rolling closures added as necessary depending on crowds.

SALEM, MA — With more than 100,000 visitors set to descend upon Salem during the month of October amid the return to a relatively normal Halloween season, the city will be closing roads to accommodate the crowds and events.

While Salem police may add rolling closures as needed on the busiest of days for safety reasons, there are a number of planned closures in place throughout the month.

Halloween downtown road closures are planned for Oct. 31 after 4 p.m. but will likely be needed for Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, as well as possibly Oct. 22-24.

Essex Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to New Liberty Street will be closed to through traffic and no on-street parking will be allowed from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.

Police will assess Essex Street from Barton Square to Washington Street each weekend. If this portion of the street is closed to traffic, vehicles will be rerouted to Barton Square to reach Washington Street.

Closure updates will be available here and on social media. The city also has an official app that will be updated in real time throughout the month.

Additional closures for the Haunted Happening Parade on Oct. 7 include the following streets closed to vehicle traffic as of 6 p.m.: Essex Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to New Liberty Street, Front Street, Central Street at the intersection of Front Street and Charter Street to the Pedestrian Mall, Lafayette Street from Derby Street to Klop Alley and Charter Street (Salem Housing Authority resident will have access to their parking lot).

A parking ban on Oct. 7 from 4 to 9 p.m. will be in place on Essex Street from Washington Street to Hawthorne Boulevard, Front Street on both sides from Washington Street to Lafayette Street and the parking meter spaces at the intersection of Charter, Front and Central streets . Those parked illegally in these locations will be towed.

The Museum Place Garage entrance will only be available from Church Street or St. Peter Street on weekends starting Oct. 2. Washington Square North, a portion of the metered spaces on Hawthorne Boulevard will be no parking on weekends as well.

Metered spaces along Lafayette Street by fire headquarters will be closed the weekends of Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 30-31.
