WESTPORT, MA — The driver who authorities said fatally struck a 30-year-old Fall River woman and left her on the side of the road turned himself in Wednesday. Gerald Lugo, 54, of Fall River surrendered to Westport Police and will be arraigned Thursday in Fall River District Court, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said.

Lugo was identified by the DA's office Tuesday as the driver of the car they said struck Stephanie Tripp on May 7.

"We would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance in helping us solve this tragic case," Quinn said on Twitter.

Authorities said Tripp was walking along Old Bedford Road when she was struck. A witness said the driver, a man, got out of the car and apologized for hitting her. He then left driving east and another witness who tried following him lost him in Dartmouth, authorities said.

Tripp was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she died more than a week later.
