Scammer Impersonates Seekok Police Officer in Sophisticated Scam

Police said a woman was victimized this week.

Seekonk police this week warned residents of a sophisticated phone scam.

Police said on Tuesday, a man claiming to be from the IRS called a woman in town and said she needed to drive to the bank to pay a debt. The woman asked to speak with a police officer, police said, and then the man hung up. Moments later, her phone rang and showed the Seekonk police department’s phone number. She picked up the phone and a man identified himself as a Seekonk police officer and told her she would be arrested if she didn’t pay the debt.

Police said a scammer used caller ID “spoofing.”

“The IRS or any law enforcement agency would not conduct business like this,” Seekonk police Capt. Frank John said in a statement.

He said if you’re the victim of the scam, call police and ask for an officer to come to your house.
