Lingo Kick Sends Sharon Football Past Falmouth

The Eagles improve to 1-1 with a 10-7 win over the Clippers.

Pardon the Sharon High School football team if they experience a rush of deja vu towards the end of their home opener against the Falmouth Clippers Saturday afternoon at Sharon High School.

Like last week, the Eagles found themselves with a chance to win with a field goal after working their way down the field late in the fourth quarter. Unlike last week however, the Eagles were celebrating a winning kick from Adrian Lingo rather than a botched snap as Sharon picked up a 10-7 win over Falmouth, their first of the year.

“It’s interesting that we have a snap that those an inch or two high last week and those same kids come out this week and execute. It’s why you practice and stick with it,” Sharon head coach Dave Morse said. “Anyone I put on the field I have complete faith in.”

With about a minute to play, the Eagles found themselves approaching field goal territory after a 36-yard run by Matt Cancian took the Eagles down the Falmouth 41-yard line. A pair of runs by Juvan Elisma and Cancian gave Sharon 11 more yards with nine seconds to go.

A pass to Bryce Smith down to the Falmouth 19-yard line set up the Lingo kick with four seconds to play. After last weekend’s high snap which cost the Eagles a chance at beating Sandwich, this week saw near perfect execution from the kicking team on the game winning play.

On defense, the Eagles forced two fumbles and an interception that would set up the drive for Sharon’s opening score.

“This game should have been a lot more one sided than it was. Our defense bailed us out time and time again. They were very stout, giving up one real drive. Aside from that, couldn’t be happier than them and their effort,” Morse said.

After an interception by Carican midway through the first quarter, the Eagles put together a nine-play, 38-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kevin Byrne with 1:35 left in the first quarter.

Falmouth’s lone score would come with 6:43 left in the third quarter off a fake pitch by quarterback Nick Couhig who would score on a 16-yard run.

The Eagles start divisional play when they visit Canton on Sept. 19.
