SHREWSBURY, MA — Flint Pond will be closed to recreation on Wednesday as crews conduct a chemical treatment for nuisance aquatic vegetation and algae.

Swimming, boating and fishing will be prohibited at the pond until Thursday, July 16, according to a public notice. The restrictions are intended to keep people safe following the treatment.

The treatment follows a similar June closure, when the Lake Quinsigamond Commission conducted a targeted management project at Flint Pond using the herbicide Sonar One to control invasive fanwort.

Fanwort is a submerged invasive aquatic plant that can form dense mats on the water surface and interfere with boating, fishing, water skiing and swimming, according to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Residents should avoid using Flint Pond for swimming, boating and fishing until the restrictions are lifted Thursday.
