SHREWSBURY, MA — Veterans receiving substance use treatment at a Shrewsbury facility will receive additional support through a regional grant announced Wednesday.
Veterans Inc. was awarded $25,000 in pooled opioid abatement funds for its Recovery Through Complementary Care Program. The funding, awarded through the Providing Access, Treatment, and Hope Grant Program, will support a part-time care coordinator at Independence Hall, an inpatient substance use treatment center at 59 South St. in Shrewsbury.
The coordinator will help residents remain engaged in treatment and leave the facility with a stronger foundation for long-term recovery, according to the town.
The Worcester-based nonprofit, founded in 1990, provides housing, employment assistance, health care support and other services to veterans and their families. Headquartered on Grove Street, the organization serves veterans throughout New England and beyond.
"This grant is an opportunity to invest in community-based spaces that recognize recovery as an ongoing journey, strengthened by meaningful relationships and opportunities for engagement," Regional Opioid Task Force Chair Emily Walker said.
The award follows another grant from the state. Veterans Inc. was awarded $120,894 for food pantry storage and kitchen upgrades, Gov. Maura Healey announced in September.
