Athlete of the Week

This week's Shrewsbury Patch Athlete of the week is the captain of the Shrewsbury hockey team, Steve Stanislawzyk.

Q: How was the 2010/2011 season to this point?

A: It's had its ups and downs. We started out 1-3-1, then went 8-0-1 in the next 9, then finished 1-5 in the last 6. We still made playoffs, though, so it's alright.

Q: Is it difficult dealing with the pressure put on your team, after winning a state championship when you were a sophomore?

A: Yes, there's definitely extra pressure. Our expectation from day 1 was to win another. That's our goal.

Q: What's the biggest difference between that state championship team and this year's squad?

A: There were more seniors on the championship team. They were a talented group, but so are we.

Q: Was that game the greatest moment you've ever had on ice?

A: Yes, definitely. A lot of my family was able to go to the game. Even my two cousins that were in the Army were able to come. For them to watch my skate on the ice of the garden meant a lot to me.

Q: Which coach has meant the most to your development as a hockey player throughout your career?

A: Bink (SHS Coach John Binkowski). Hands down.

Q: What about your teammates? Who's pushed you the most?

A: I can't narrow it down. A lot of players have helped me get to this point.

Q: Would you like to play hockey in college?

A: Yes, I want to play at Southern New Hampshire University. They have a good hockey program, and I want to major in sports management there.
