Borders Sparkles With Silver (and Pink)

Book release celebration draws a crowd of preschool and elementary age fans.

More than just the sun was shining as a special kids’ event took place at the local  bookstore.

"Silverlicious," the newest addition in the "Pinkalicious" book series by Victoria Kann, was the center of attention at this sparkling celebration.

The program, which took place on Feb. 12, began with Border's associate Cassie Walling displaying a large container of pink marshmallows. Participants were invited to jot down a guess as to how many marshmallows were in the clear tub, the closet guesser to bring the treats home with them.

The main event was Walling’s reading of "Silverlicious." Quiet and attentive, nearly two dozen Pinkalicious fans, many dressed in signature pink, listened intently in a circle on the floor while moms, dads and grandparents mingled nearby. Told in a series of letters to and from holiday characters, "Silverlicious," true to the book series, captures the main character in all of her pinkness, teaching a valuable lesson about kindness in the end.

Throughout her animated reading, Walling engaged the audience with questions like “Do any of you have a sweet tooth?” and  “We’ve had visits from Cupid and the Easter Bunny, who do you think will come next?"

This latest picture book focuses more on Pinkalicious’ love of candy than of baked goods, but many audience members still have a special place in their hearts for her original favorite snack, cupcakes, which were the focus of the day's craft.

The Silverlicious celebration and all Pinkalicious books shined brightly with the younger set:

“I already have Goldilicious, Pinkalicious, and Purplicious,” said MacKenzie, 5, who loved the event. “Pinkalicious is pretty.”

“They (the series of books) are all good,” said Emma, 7, whose 5-year-old sister Kate enjoyed designing her cupcake best (the craft at the event), because “…it’s my favorite color.”

“I love that they put cupcakes in it and other cool stuff,” said Cailin, 7. “Like when it was Christmas, the cool presents.”

Cailin can look forward to baking up some of her own “cool stuff” since younger sister Shannon, runner-up in the marshmallow guessing contest, took home the book "Super Simple Cupcake Recipes," as her prize.

The Pinkalicious books are listed as best for children ages 4 to 8 and are available for purchase at Border's and other book retailers in the area.
