UPDATED: Car Fire Backs Up Traffic on I-290

The Shrewsbury Fire Department responded to the car fire just west of Route 140 on I-290.

At about 9:21 a.m. Monday, a car fire was reported on I-290 west just past Exit 23 in Shrewsbury.

The fire was extinguished by the and traffic was backed up for about a half mile.

"No injuries were reported at the accident," said State Police Trooper Thomas Murphy. "It was a 2009 Toyota Corolla and the driver was a 60-year-old, but there will be no investigation at this time."

Murphy said they respond to many car fires like this where it is most likely a mechanical problem.

The accident was cleared by 11:30 a.m. and traffic has returned to normal.
