Driver Killed In Crash On Route 20 In Shrewsbury

Police have not yet released the victim's identity or other details, as the investigation is ongoing.

SHREWSBURY, MA — A person driving on Route 20 was killed after an early morning crash on Friday, according to police.

Shrewsbury police said officers responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle accident in the area of 800 Hartford Turnpike, or Route 20 in Shrewsbury, around 1:23 a.m.

The first officer to arrive found a Ford sedan overturned, resting upside down on its roof. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A second vehicle, a Toyota sedan, had hit the Ford in the roadway after it crashed before emergency crews arrived, police said. However, the Toyota was not involved in the first crash, and its driver was not injured.

Hartford Turnpike was closed for multiple hours after the crash, and traffic was diverted.

The crash is now being investigated by Officer Charland and several other members from the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction team, who responded to the scene. The Shrewsbury Police Department's Drone unit also responded to help with the investigation, and the Northborough Police Department helped with traffic.

Police have not yet released the victim's identity or other details, as the investigation is ongoing.

"The Shrewsbury Police Department extends our condolences to the victim and their family after this tragic incident," the agency wrote in a news release on Friday afternoon.
