The Board of Selectmen acts as the Town's Chief Executive Body responsible for the general welfare of the community and to follow the guidelines set forth in Operational Policies for the Board of Selectmen. Specific powers and responsibilities of the Board of Selectmen are set forth in Chapter 559 of the Acts of 1953, which is better known as the Town Manager Act and the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. These and additional duties include:
- appointing and overseeing the work of the Town Manager.
- reviewing and issuing licenses to do business in the Town of Shrewsbury: alcohol, restaurant, new/used car dealership and garage and other miscellaneous licenses.
- reviewing annual department budgets.
- discussing, proposing and voting on Proposition 2 1/2 decisions.
- issuing requests for Interest in Chapter 40B proposals.
- overseeing Chapter 43D permitting.
