Joe Sawyer, Superintendent of Schools, Liam Hurley, Director of Business Services, and Melissa Maguire, Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, presented information regarding the development of next year's school budget to the School Committee on Wednesday, Feb. 9. While a formal budget request is not expected until March, a gap of 3.9% between this year's funding and the funding required to maintain the current personnel and programming has been identified. Making investments in technology and textbooks and adding personnel to meet mandates and reduce costs was also discussed. The budget is in its very early stage and will change to accommodate the available resources.
Joe Sawyer stated in an e-mail that the "savings we are realizing this year and next year, particularly in the area of Special Education, along with federal funding we can carry forward into next year, will help mitigate the difficult economic circumstances."
