UPDATED with VIDEO: Heavy Snow Melt Causes Sewer Main Break
Due to the large amounts of snow melt and rain since yesterday, a sewer main break has occurred in a section of town.
Resulting from the rain event over the period of March 6 and 7, and the heavy snow melt, a portion of the town's main sewer line has experienced a breach.
The breach occurred near a manhole near 15 Thayer Rd. in Northborough. This portion of the 24-inch sewer main runs from the Town of Shrewsbury to the treatment plant in Westborough.
The Department of Environmental Protection was notified upon notice of event.
No service has been affected in the town's water and sewer operations, according to Town Manager Daniel Morgado.
The typical flow in this line is between 2.5 and 3 million gallons per day. The meter at the treatment plant that measures the flow from the Town of Shrewsbury is indicating that flow on March 7 is over 10 million gallons.
Emergency crews will be hired to assist in the repairs. Because the flow in the line is peaking, repairs can not start until pressure is reduced.
The Town of Shrewsbury will continue to monitor the situation and begin the repair as soon as it is deemed safe. Pumps will be brought to the area and a bypass system will be set up so that system can continue to operate while the repair is attended to. The bypass will run from intersection of Otis Street easterly to the intersection of Davis Street.
The Town of Shrewsbury is working with the Department of Public Works in Northborough in addressing residents concerns in the vicinity of the break.
Updates will be provided as information becomes available. Questions can be addressed to Michael Hale, Assistant Town Manager, at 508-841-8508.
