Legislative Redistricting Released

The 11th Worcester District will remain relatively unchanged.

The following was submitted by State Rep. Matt Beaton, R-Shrewsbury:

The Special Joint Committee on Redistricting released their draft maps of House and Senate districts. Based upon 2010 census data, the proposed redrawn maps will determine what each Legislative district will look like for the next 10 years. For the 11th Worcester, Beaton announced that the district will remain relatively unchanged. The draft map of the 11th Worcester District includes the entire town of Shrewsbury and Precincts 4 and 5 of the town of Westborough, all in Worcester County.

“Our area had significant growth over the past 10 years with the town of Shrewsbury gaining another precinct,” Beaton said. “I’m pleased to see that the 11th Worcester District will stay about the same despite the increase in population. I’ve enjoyed being Shrewsbury and Westborough’s state representative and look forward to continuing to listen to our community’s needs and concerns while being a strong voice for our district on Beacon Hill.”

The proposed House and Senate maps will be under public review and comment for the next week before the committee makes a recommendation to the state legislature. Maps for congressional districts for representation in Washington, DC have not been released yet and are expected to be released in the very near future. The reason for rolling out the state legislative maps now is due to the fact that Massachusetts law requires that anyone seeking office for state representative or state senator must be a resident of their respective district for at least one year.
