Little Shop of Horrors Comes to Oak Middle School

Centre Stage Productions is putting on shows on Saturday and Sunday.

That man-eating plant will cry “Feed Me, Seymour” next weekend as Centre Stage Productions performs Little Shop of Horrors at .

Show times are at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 7, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8.

“Little Shop of Horrors is a comedy horror rock musical, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human flesh and blood,” according to a written statement from the theatre company. “The musical is based on the low budget 1960 film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, ‘Skid Row (Downtown),’ ‘Somewhere That’s Green’ and ‘Suddenly Seymour’.”

Centre Stage Productions, a summer theatre company, is in its second year.

“We are currently producing a production for teenagers but hopefully will be able to expand our offerings in the future,” said Nancy Freeman, who is the show’s producer and costumer.

The show will feature 48 students in grades 8 through 12, including 41 from Shrewsbury. Others are from Northborough, Westborough, and Charlton.

The show was cast in mid-May and rehearsals started June 21, according to Freeman.

“It's a professional theatre schedule doing it in two weeks’ time,” she said.

"Under the direction of Nathan Colby and music direction of Michael Lapomardo, these budding thespians will be put through the paces to present Little Shop of Horrors written by Howard Ashman with music by Alan Menken," according to the written statement.

“Centre Stage Productions is dedicated to providing theatrical experiences for the youth of Central Massachusetts,” the statement said. “Students are encouraged to create, imagine and explore the arts through the medium of live theatre, in the hopes they will discover things about themselves and others, and learn to accept and respect what is unique in their fellow participants.”
