Neighbors Tried to Save Woman Who Died in Fire

Two neighbors and a man driving by tried to save the woman who died in the fire overnight in town.

Bobbi-Jo Welsh looked out her window and saw the flames coming out of the bedroom window of her neighbor's home last night.

"I ran out of the house with no shoes on and then I saw a Good Samaritan drive by, stop and then back up and jump out of his car," Welsh said of the fire at "My 19-year-old son and the Good Samaritan knocked down the door and I called out for Paula and tried to switch on the lights, but it was like there was no power."

"She was a really nice woman who I always saw walking her dog," Welsh said. "But she hadn't been out of the house in about a week and we found out after the fire that the dog hadn't been with her for about two weeks."

Shumway was a tenant in the duplex, Welsh said.

"The landlord's daughter and her boyfriend live next door," she said. "She was in the shower when she heard the alarm and her boyfriend wasn't home at the time."

said the fire started in the bedroom and spread quickly through home. Firefighters found Shumway in the bathroom of the duplex.

Today, the landlord's daughter was removing some belongings from the house while the Shrewsbury Police Department, state fire marshal's office and the Shrewsbury Fire Department investigated the cause of the fire. She declined to comment about the fire.

"We don't have a cause right now," Chief Vuona said. "We're still investigating."

The chief had said that oxygen tanks were found in the home.
