SELCO Searches for New General Manager

Now that the current general manager announced his retirement, SELCO is seeking candidates to fill the vacancy.

Shrewsbury Electric and Light Operations (SELCO) is accepting applications for general manager, in the hopes of filling the position by late March or early April.

SELCO is "a community owned and operated utility offering Shrewsbury residents and businesses high-quality electric and cable services at competitive prices.  SELCO provides Electric, Cable, Telephone, and Internet services to residential and commercial customers within the Town of Shrewsbury," according to their Web site.

For the position of general manager, SELCO is seeking a candidate with a bachelor of science degree, an MBA or equivalent, experience in financial analysis, and business plan development and implementation. They should also have multi-discipline business management experience along with technical knowlegge and experience in CATV, communications and/or the electric utilities industries, according to the posting on SELCO's Web site.

The salary range for the position is $130,000 to $160,000.

The vacancy is due to the retirement of current General Manager Thomas R. Josie, who has served SELCO for the last 26 years, according to their Web site.

Josie’s  retirement will be effective as of the  official  start date of the new general manager.

Applications are due by Jan. 21, and chosen candidates can expect an initial interview with the seven Search Committee members. Finalists will be welcomed for an on-site visit and additional meetings and interviews. The Search Committee members hope to make a decision by March or April of 2011, according to the Web site.

"SELCO’s Electric operations were established in 1908 and the cable system began in 1982 with the Town of Shrewsbury awarding a cable franchise to SELCO.  SELCO is one of 40 municipal electric utilities in Massachusetts and is one of only four that also has a cable television operation. SELCO is a vertically integrated electric utility with operations that include typical business functions of finance, accounting, customer service, marketing and informational technology.  Electric utility operations include power supply planning and procurement, distribution engineering and line construction and maintenance crews. The cable operations include a headend for receiving, processing and distributing digital, HD and video on demand video service.  Internet services also originate from the headend where fiber networks to the Internet backbone connect to the cable system to provide internet service to customers. We maintain our own crews of technicians for construction, maintenance, and service installations for our HFC field plant operations," according to the job posting.
