Shrewsbury Basketball Beats Westborough

Shrewsbury boys basketball took care of Westborough during Monday night's game.

The Shrewsbury boys' basketball team took care of visiting Westborough 63-41 Monday night for its second win of the young season.

"When we are able to establish our inside play and get the ball down low, we are a successful team, and we were able to do that tonight," said Shrewsbury head coach Adrian Machado after his squad improved to 2-1. "We are a tough team to match up with and once we were able to establish our inside game, we were able to work it inside and outside, and I think allowed us to create a little separation."

Leading the way for the Colonials was senior forward Wil Michalski with 19 points. Classmates Ryan Stowe and Matt Kneece each tossed in 11 points in a winning effort. Fellow senior Josh Desai scored 8 points for the Colonials.

The Rangers (1-2) were paced by seniors Brian Orlando and Pat Hession, who each finished with 11 points. Andrew Reynolds chipped in with 9 points for Westborough.

The Colonials led from start to finish in this one, jumping out to a 13-10 lead after one quarter and using a 12-0 run to open the second frame to push the lead to double digits at 25-10. The visitors were unable to shrink the deficit to single digits before halftime as Shrewsbury enjoyed a 34-19 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Rangers tried to make a run, coming out of the locker room on a 10-4 run to cut the Colonials lead to 38-29, the closest the Rangers had been since the opening minutes of the second quarter. Shrewsbury would respond however, back to back buckets by Stowe and Ross Fournier (5 points) pushed the lead back over 10 points and Westborough failed to trim it back to single digits the remainder of the night. Shrewsbury held a 47-33 lead after three quarters.

The Colonials are back in action on Wednesday when they host Mid-Wach foe Algonquin Regional.
