Beal School Redevelopment: Shrewsbury Begins Hearings
Key hearings will take place throughout January and February for a 55-unit mixed-use project at the former school.

SHREWSBURY, MA β Shrewsbury will kick off a series of meetings this week that will shape the redevelopment of the Beal School, which a developer plans to convert into a 55-unit mixed-use project.
The Shrewsbury Select Board in March voted to enter into an agreement with developer Civico Greenly, which bought the site for $250,000 with a plan to build 48 market-rate units, seven affordable units and about 7,000 square feet of commercial space, according to the town. There will also be more than half an acre of open space at the site, and parking spots set aside for public use.
Hearings over the project will begin Thursday with a site plan review, and a look at how the project will impact the town's finances. That hearing will be held at the Bent Room at the high school.

On Jan. 19, the Planning Board will hold a special meeting to review a traffic study. That will be followed on Feb. 2 by a review of architectural plans for the 1-7 Maple Ave. project.
The former school closed in 2021, and Town Meeting in 2020 voted to sell the property and rezone the downtown area to allow for more mixed-use developments.
