Technology and Special Education Top Budget Meeting
The School Committee and Finance Committee discussed proposed cuts to the School Department's budget.

Last night's budget meeting between the Finance Committee and the went over the proposed cuts as well as technology and special education funding.
Here's the 3 things that Superintendent of Schools Joseph Sawyer is proposing to eliminate:
1. The proposed technology budget would have increased the budget by $400,000. Sawyer recommends scrubbing that cost.

2. The superintendent recommends scrubbing the curriculum and textbooks budget to level funding, as opposed to the $210,000 increase.
3. Sawyer recommends not hiring new staff and personnel this year.

The proposed budget is 2.98 percent higher than the current year's school budget, which reflects $1.4 million above the current year. Town Manager Daniel Morgado proposed cuting $2.1 million from the proposed school budget.
In addition to the above changes, Sawyer is also researching alternative funding sources.
The Finance Committee also discussed the increasing cost of special education as well as school choice costs throughout the district.
