This Week in Shrewsbury Sports

A wrap-up of the week's game in high school sports from Feb. 14 to Feb. 21.

It was a great week for basketball players.

Shrewsbury High School Varsity Basketball:

After defeating Holy Name on Monday night, The girls varsity team traveled to Burncoat High on Friday. The Colonials let loose on the Patriots, defeating them 62 - 27. The scoring for the girls was very even. Everyone contributed. Danielle Deraney and Rachel Pineda led the way with 12 points each.

The boys team didn't do too shabby either. On Tuesday night, they beat Groton-Dunstable 72 - 50. The Colonials had a 15 - 0 run to start the game. Senior Josh Desai was the leading scorer. The Shrewsbury High School boys didn't beat up on Burncoat as bad as the girls had on Friday night, but almost. Shrewsbury High School cruised past the Patriots on their way to a 75 - 44 victory. Wil Michalski was the high man with 16 points.

Saint John's Varsity Basketball:

The 's basketball team split their games this week. After defeating a tough Saint Bernard's squad on Monday, the Pioneers were defeated in Fitchburg on Friday. After being down 18 points at halftime, Saint John's crawled back only to lose 58 - 56. Fitchburg star guard Quinton Perkins led all scorers with 20.

Shrewsbury Varsity Ice Hockey:

On the ice, the Shrewsbury High School girls continued their path of destruction with two more wins this week. The girls beat up on both Everett and Gardner. More scores from the usual suspects for Shrewsbury. Breanna Monroe, Julia Mastrototaro and Samantha DiReda led the way, as the Colonials look forward to a state championship run.

The boys hockey team had a week they would like to soon forget. They lost to Wachusett on monday 4 - 1, lost to Saint Johns on Thursday 8 - 0, and lost to Bishop Stang 5 - 4 the following day. After being outscored 17 - 5 on the week, the Colonials look to bounce back, as they will host Algonquin this Wednesday, and get a rematch versus Wachusett on Friday the Feb. 25.
