Wish List: New Police Station

Department heads go over the 55 projects for the town.

From the Route 9 state bridge project to the South Quinsigamond traffic signal near Route 9 intersection, town officials recently discussed what projects need to be fixed or replaced.

While there were 55 on the wish list, many won't be done anytime soon with little funding available to complete the projects.

At the selectmen's meeting on Tuesday night, the met with all the department heads and here's the highlights:

  • Route 9 Bridge Replacement: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is still working out the details of the project including the aesthetics, traffic flow and minimizing the impacts on businesses. The construction is expected to start in 2012. has said in the past he is concerned about the impact the project will have on the medical calls his department responds to as the Route 9 bridge is the quickest route to UMass Memorial Medical Center.
  • South Quinsigamond Traffic Signal: This intersection has the most traffic flowing through during any given day, according to the and drivers report many accidents to police. There is $350,000 earmarked to improve the intersection thanks to the state, but the town is hoping to have input on improving the entrances to and White City East plazas.
  • The town is hoping the state will fund resurfacing Boylston Street from I-290 to the town center. The estimate for the project is $660,000.
  • The police chief has recommended building a new police station because of lack of space in the current location. It is part of his strategic plan.
