$1B Green Line Extension Contract Approved

The MBTA's FMCB on Monday approved the agency's largest-ever contract, awarded last week to the GLX design-build team.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The MBTA's Fiscal and Management Control Board on Monday approved the agency's $1.08 billion design-build contract for the Green Line Extension project. Green Line Constructors, a multi-firm team comprised of Fluor Enterprises, the Middlesex Corporation, Herzog Contracting Corp. and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., was named the MBTA's winning bidder on Friday. It is the largest construction contract awarded in the agency's history.

The team's proposal came in well under the $1.3 billion ceiling set by the MBTA with a price offering of $954,618,000, according to State House News Service. It also includes all six additive options that design-build teams were asked to factor into their proposal, provided it did not go over budget. Additive options include canopies, public art and some elevators, which had originally been removed when the project was scaled back.

Green Line Constructors' contract of $1,082,118,600 includes contingency costs, SHNS reported.

Approval of the contract represents a major step in a project many believed to be defunct. Project Manager John Dalton has previously said he expects to give the selected design-build firm the green light on Dec. 11, about two months earlier than initially anticipated. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

The $2.3 billion project will bring six new stations to Somerville and Medford, rebuilt the northern Green Line terminus in East Cambridge and serve about 50,000 riders, according to SHNS.
