A Facial Designed to Relax Your Whole Body

The facials at Skin & Body Works include a relaxing massage.

Are you suffering from cabin fever after keeping the kids entertained on snow days? Or perhaps you’re simply tired, harried and longing for an hour or two just for yourself.

One way to have your strains and tension literally smoothed away is with a facial specifically designed for your complexion at Somerville’s . It lasts a full 55 minutes—consider it an hour just for you. All are welcome here, and the mini-spa makes a special effort for mothers.

“We create an extremely comfortable atmosphere for mothers here,” said Kathleen Thomas, owner of Skin & Body Works, which opened ten years ago Davis Square.

“New mothers bring their babies right into the treatment room and others wheel their toddlers inside in their carriages,” Thomas said. “A large number of mothers with young children come here and we have comfortable spots for the kids to sit and books for them to read.”

Whether you go alone or with your kids, the experience is designed to make you relax. Once you’re in the attractive and spotlessly clean treatment rooms, just let one of the three aestheticians on staff start the pampering.

Each facial—whether basic, purifying, hydrating or infused with Vitamin C—includes a massage of the face, neck, shoulders, arms and feet.

“In some spas, the aestheticians put a mask on you and then leave for 10 minutes,” Thomas said. “We stay in the room with the client the entire time and do massages throughout the facial.”

She added that the spa caters to pregnant women as well, placing pillows in spots to make them comfortable or positioning them on their sides during the facial.

In addition to refreshed and vibrant skin, Thomas said, customers walk out the door feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

“It’s an escape from the outside world to have a facial,” she said. “Just to sit in the waiting room and read a magazine is a pleasure for busy mothers. And then they go into a room where they are totally pampered, fully in relaxation mode where there are candles and soothing music and they can chat or remain perfectly silent.”

Skin & Body Works is open Tuesday 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wednesday Noon-8:30 p.m.; Thursday 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments are recommended. Call 617-623-9100 for additional information.
