The Somerville-based startup sends pre-sorted dose packages to customers and coordinates refills and renewals.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Amazon announced Thursday that it is buying a Somerville-based online pharmacy startup. The retail giant will acquire PillPack, a delivery service that sends pre-sorted dose packages to customers and coordinates refills and renewals.

"PillPack’s visionary team has a combination of deep pharmacy experience and a focus on technology," Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer, said in a statement. "PillPack is meaningfully improving its customers’ lives, and we want to help them continue making it easy for people to save time, simplify their lives, and feel healthier. We’re excited to see what we can do together on behalf of customers over time."

The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be closed during the second half of 2018, according to a statement from Amazon. PillPack, which has offices in Manchester, NH in addition to its location on Beacon Street, employs more than 700 people, the Boston Globe reported.
