Former Food Network Champion Chef Launching Mediterranean Dinner Restaurant In Somerville

Saba Wahid Duffy has experience working internationally.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A high-profile chef is set to open her newest restaurant in Union Square this week.

Saba Wahid Duffy’s Kush Modern Mediterranean is slated to open at 5 Sanborn Circuit on Tuesday, April 28. The eatery is an evolution from what was once a food truck and now aims to be a “gourmet” brick-and-mortar halal offering.

Wahid Duffy is a chef with more than 15 years of experience. The Framingham native is most known for her 2021 appearance on the Food Network series “Chopped: Martha’s Rules” in 2021 in which she won $50,000 by defeating 15 of her peers in a cooking competition hosted by Martha Stewart. Her winnings were used to launch the food truck that has now turned into the new restaurant. She has also appeared on multiple other cooking reality shows, including “Flavortown Food Fight,” where she was awarded $20,000 for her efforts by Guy Fieri. However, her television experience dates back further than the last five years.

After graduating from the French Culinary Institute in New York City, Wahid Duffy spent multiple years in Dubai where she contributed to launching restaurants and co-hosted two daily cooking and lifestyles shows.

“After returning to Boston, Chef Saba shifted her focus to culinary education, mentoring aspiring chefs and sharing knowledge shaped by years in catering, media, and private dining,” Kush said about its founder. “She later worked as a high-end appliance demonstration chef before finding purpose at a nonprofit culinary training school, where she helped empower the next generation of talent.”

Kush Modern Mediterranean will be open for dinner service at 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. Some of its featured menu items reportedly include curry-spiced falafel, Harissa brown sugared braised beef, spicy macaroni and cheese, Mediterranean chicken, and a lamb burger.

An open house of the space will take place at 12 p.m. in between the grand opening and inaugural dinner service.
