Somerville To Host 2 Prescription Drug Take Back Day Drop-Off Events
Residents can drop off unused medications and receive prevention resources.
SOMERVILLE, MA — Residents will have two chances on Saturday, April 25, to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The city is hosting two staffed drop-off events from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Public Safety Headquarters on 220 Washington St., and the Teele Square Fire Station on 6 Newbury St.
"Keeping unused or expired medications at home can be unsafe for children, pets, and adults," Mayor Jake Wilson said in the event's announcement. "Whether accidental poisoning or intentional misuse, you can prevent these potential harms by safely disposing of prescription drugs you no longer need."
The city said the events are meant to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of the prescription drugs.

Staff from the Somerville Police Department's Community, Help, Outreach, and Recovery unit as well as the Prevention Services division will be present at both locations. According to the city, they will provide prevention information and resources such as free Narcan and fentanyl test strips, in addition to the medication drop-off service.
The city also shared guidance for residents bringing medications to the event. For bottled medications, residents are being asked to remove or scratch out any personal information while leaving the name of the medication visible before disposal. Caps on liquid medications should be secured before they are dropped off.

Somerville also offers a year-round option for residents who cannot make the April 25 event. Unneeded prescription medications can also be dropped off 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Somerville Public Safety Building on 220 Washington St.
Residents seeking more information can contact Somerville's Crisis Intervention Team Director Jennifer Korn or Prevention Services Director Tina Los. The April 25 collection is part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and will run for three hours at both Somerville locations.
