SOMERVILLE, MA — A local swimming facility is on the verge of a three-week closure for scheduled annual cleaning and maintenance.
Ginny Smithers Pool at 5 Cherry St. will close beginning Monday, Aug. 24, affecting both the main lap pool and the warm therapy pool. According to city officials, the pools are expected to reopen Monday, Sept. 14.
During the closure, Recreation and Public Works staff will drain and thoroughly clean the pools and surrounding areas. Tile and grout repairs will also be completed, along with any additional maintenance work that is needed.
The pools will then be refilled and the water tested and balanced before reopening.
Meanwhile, Dilboy Pool on Alewife Brook Parkway will remain open through Sept. 5, giving residents another swimming option during part of the closure. Admission is free.
Dilboy Pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 31, with adult lap swimming available from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The pool will be open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1 through Sept. 4 and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 5.
Sept. 5 will be the final day of the season at Dilboy Pool.
Another public swimming option is the state-operated Latta Brothers Memorial Pool at Foss Park, 235 Broadway, which offers free admission to Massachusetts residents.
Anyone with questions is asked to contact the city's aquatics staff.
