Residents are about to lose one swimming option in the city as the summer is in its final stretch.

SOMERVILLE, MA — A local swimming facility is on the verge of a three-week closure for scheduled annual cleaning and maintenance.

Ginny Smithers Pool at 5 Cherry St. will close beginning Monday, Aug. 24, affecting both the main lap pool and the warm therapy pool. According to city officials, the pools are expected to reopen Monday, Sept. 14.

During the closure, Recreation and Public Works staff will drain and thoroughly clean the pools and surrounding areas. Tile and grout repairs will also be completed, along with any additional maintenance work that is needed.
