Barack Obama Once Called Somerville's Winter Hill Home

As the 44th President moves out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, a look back at where he spent his Harvard Law years.

SOMERVILLE, MA – For the past eight years, Barack Obama has lived in some pretty sweet digs.

But before he roamed the halls of the White House, the 44th President of the United States called a historic brick building in Somerville's Winter Hill neighborhood his home.

Obama lived in the Langmaid Terrace building at 365 Broadway from 1988 to 1991 when he was a student at Harvard Law School.

Built in the late 1800s by a family of local developers, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. But it was its famous former tenant that catapulted it into the spotlight in the new millennium.

A 2012 article on Boston.com profiled a field trip the kids at the nearby Elizabeth Peabody House took to Obama's former home, where they asked the landlord about his time in Somerville.

The landlord, Jay Holmes, told them that Obama always paid his rent but sometimes got parking tickets, according to the story.

So just remember the next time you look at those orange envelopes piling up in your glove box – maybe you too can one day be President of the United States.
