The Squares of Somerville
Detailing some of the squares in Somerville and exploring what makes them special, places to visit, and why you should you should check them out!
As a native Californian one thing I immediately fell in love with here in New England was the idea of the “Square”. Little central locations within a town that house everything a local resident would need including laundromats, restaurants, clothing stores, liquor stores, bars, coffee shops, and much more. Now that I’ve been here 10 years I can safely say the “Square” is something I would be lost without. If I had to go back to driving everywhere and most things being in strip malls I would definitely cry. I absolutely love that within walking distance from my house I can do just about anything that I could in the big ole’ city, which quite honestly is often times better quality and more fun.
So, I’ll be doing a little mini blog series paying homage to the many great squares in Somerville, all of which have their own unique personalities. To kick it off I'm starting with Union Square, Somerville. After all, this is the square I spend most of my time in! I did a little on it already, but I most certainly did not highlight everything there is to note. There are so many gems packed into this little square I could fill multiple posts. So, I’ll stick to a top 10 of my all time favorites for now.

Precinct: What can I say? I have definitely visited this lovely eating/drinking establishment multiple days in a row, one more than one occasion. Usually I get the same waiter when I do this. They do a double-take, and I always have to sheepishly say “yes I was here yesterday, with someone else”. But hey, that's just how much I love this place. It's got a cozy, slightly upscale pub feel to it. Yet, the food is very reasonably priced and is sooo good! Plus, they have prime realty for outdoor seating in the summer, with lots of tables, which is a major bonus. They also have a fantastic beer list, super friendly wait staff, and good food. What else do you need?

The Independent: This is another one of my favorites; an oldie but a goodie. I've been going to “The Indo” since I moved to the area 8 years ago. They are owned by the same folks as Precinct yet you get a totally different vibe. Again, the beer list is awesome and on one side is a tiny little English-feel pub with exposed brick, where board games and books line the shelves. On the other side is a fancier restaurant. The prices here are a bit steeper but it's worth the splurge. The restaurant is a great one to go to for special occasions or if you've got family in town and want to impress.
Sweet Ginger: This relatively new-kid-on-the-block Thai restaurant has quickly become my go-to for Thai food. The Beef Pad Kra Pow is so delish, and I could eat a giant plate full of their spring rolls. We often get take out but they do serve beer/wine and a cute seating area, so occasionally we make the trek over and eat at the restaurant- either way if you haven't checked out this place yet I don't know what you're waiting for!
Cantina La Mexicana: I could go on and on about this place, but will try not to. I looooove it. Again a place I've been going to since I moved to the area and a main reason why I have not left. The food I covet above all other foods is Mexican. Growing up in Central Cali you could say I was spoiled and I think of myself as something of a connoisseur! Upon first moving to Boston, I immediately set out to find good Mexican food. This was no easy feat. Two years later when I found this place it was love at first taste. They didn't always have the big fancy restaurant section. I do enjoy going in here from time to time for the atmosphere and the yummy White Pear Sangria. But in the end I am fiercely loyal to the take-out side. If you want the real deal try this first. Authentic, inexpensive and heavenly. They also do some mean catering- I've catered summer backyard picnics, birthday parties, and New Years parties with tamale and taco plates from here and I have never had a disappointed party-goer to date!
Capone’s: Do you like homemade pasta in any flavor you could possibly imagine? Do you like home cooked sauces (or gravy) to go with that pasta? How about make-your-own-canole-kits? Or Chocolate-Covered-Figs with Brandy Ganache? This is the store to go to then! Tucked way just a few doors down from Sweet Ginger on Bow Street, this is another long-time Union Square establishment. It's such a pleasant experience and a great stop over on the way home for an unexpected surprise for dinner that has all the convenience of a take-out but with tasting like you had an Italian grandmother come to the house to cook. They also have a second location on Mass Ave in Cambridge, going towards Arlington.
Bloc 11: The sister cafe to Diesel (Davis Square). I love the fact that this place used to be a bank and that now you can sit in the vaults. They have large windows and outdoor seating for the summer and a cozy back room with a gas fireplace for the winter. They also regularly exhibit local artists work on the walls. And they have a to-die-for Iced Hazelnut Latte. Watch out Starbucks!
Prospect Hill: I love the views from this historical point in Somerville. It's amazing to think we live around some of the most historically relevant sites in American history. There's also a huge grassy area, so grab a blanket and a picnic and enjoy looking out over Somerville all the way into Boston. Great spot for viewing the 4th of July fireworks as well- just get there early!
CorpBasics: This is a new addition to the square. It's at the corner of Bow Street and Somerville Ave. Its got an unassuming entrance and a simple sign. But from what I can gather, don't be fooled by this! I have yet to go, but I am already planning my first visit. Once I looked at their website I knew I had to check it out. The biggest draw for me are the boxing classes. But they also have Zumba, Bootcamp, and many other unique classes, plus personal training. I will be going soon and hopefully have a full post to report on how it went!
Taza Chocolate: How many people can boast that they have a chocolate factory in their own backyards- and one that gives tours and sells plenty of chocolate goodies right from the factory? This is a fun activity for when you've got some fam or friends in town or you're just craving being surrounded by chocolate. If you are chocolate freak like me then try this recipe for Iced Hot Chocolate- sounds lik ea yummy, refreshing treat to have in this heat, no?
Events Galore: The great thing about Union Square is the large pedestrian-friendly section we have and it's fully taken advantage of. There are all sorts of events and activities such as the Union Square Farmers Market; Rock & Roll Yard Sale; Fluff Festival; Rock, Paper Scissors Competition and more! Check out Union Square Main Streets and the Somerville Arts Council for info on upcoming events.
Of course, like I first said, this is just a sampling of the places in Union Square that make it such a vibrant, enganging, and unique place to live and visit.
What do you love most about Union Square? Which places are your favorite haunts?
For you Somervillians who haven’t yet made your way to this neck of the woods I suggest you start by checking out one of the places listed above. I don’t doubt you’ll be happy you did!
