Did you ever want to go to art school but accidentally went to law school instead? Somerville is a city full of artists–become one of them for a night!&nbsp;
High above Union Square, a different kind of school is in session. For one night only, a collective of Somerville’s arts organizations and businesses that call themselves Somerville Arts Engine is transforming 10 Prospect Street into One Night Art School—an immersive, hands-on arts experience where you can sample a semester's worth of creativity in a single evening. 
This is no passive lecture. Come draw a live model, add your mark to a community mural, sing along with the Strummerville Ukulele Club, or pinch a pot. Hop into an interactive podcasting experience, learn to pop, or attend a Q&amp;A with professional artists. Grab the open mic for some live comedy coaching, drop into a collage session, and experiment with color theory. Come try a little bit of everything, no prerequisites required!
 Your professors for the evening are some of Somerville's most beloved arts organizations and creative businesses, including Boston Figure Art Center, Arts at the Armory, Deborah Mason Performing Arts Center, EventThem, KMW School of Painting, Mudflat, New Impressions Print Studio, Somerville Open Studios, The Somerville Museum and Tiny Turns Paperie.

The Rockwell

Thom Tran is a Los Angeles–based comedian, actor, musician, and U.S. Army combat veteran whose stand-up career began after surviving a gunshot wound to the back of the head while deployed to Iraq.
Following his medical retirement, Tran relocated to Los Angeles in 2008 and quickly immersed himself in the comedy scene. He went on to found The GIs of Comedy, an internationally touring, all-military veteran stand-up group that has performed for U.S. service members stationed and deployed in combat zones worldwide. The group was featured on Larry Charles’ Dangerous World of Comedy (Netflix) and has appeared on CBS and NBC.
As a solo act, Tran tours nationally and internationally, including dates across Europe with longtime collaborator Brad Williams, performing in Denmark, Norway, England, Ireland, and beyond. His material blends sharp observational humor with lived experience, delivered with discipline and timing honed both on stage and in service.
Based in Hollywood, Tran is a regular at premier clubs including the World Famous Laugh Factory and the Comedy &amp; Magic Club, in addition to theaters and venues throughout Southern California. On screen, Tran has co-starred on NCIS: Los Angeles and SEAL Team (CBS) and appears in the feature film My Dead Friend Zoe alongside Morgan Freeman, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Ed Harris.

What happens when Flamenco collides with Step and Tap? When West African dance intersects with Kathak? Join us for the 4th annual Feet Keep the Beat Festival to find out!
This year, Arts at the Armory has commissioned our collective of six percussive dancers and five musicians to create ROOTS &amp; WINGS: The Next Generation, premiering on July 31st.
As the featured artists tell the story of how feet have been keeping the beat across time, cultures, and geographies, they will deepen their collaboration by sharing the stage with the next generation. Some will perform alongside their children or their students, creating a powerful celebration of artistic inheritance, mentorship, and renewal. Representing how rhythm, movement, and cultural traditions are passed from one generation to the next.&nbsp;

If you’re a sketch writer, performer, director or teacher who is interested in process, experimentation and discovery, this workshop is for you! This full day session will operate like a professional sketch rehearsal with a focus on material generation and productive exploration. Through writing, improvisation and on-our-feet exercises, we’ll play with a range of techniques to create material. Participants will leave with new creative tools, and new ways to approach writing, performing and developing sketch. Participants should have some prior experience with sketch comedy. A comfort with improvisation is a plus. Come ready to play and let’s see what we can make together!
ABOUT ANDY: Andy Miara is a former director for The Second City in Chicago where he also served as a core writing instructor in the Second City Training Center. He is a former head writer of The Onion News Network and co-creator of The Onion’s sister site, Clickhole.com. Alongside Tim Robinson and Mark Raterman, Miara co-founded the sketch group My Mans. The trio developed pilots for Comedy Central and Adult Swim, and created The Thanksgiving House, an immersive theater show in Los Angeles produced by Funny or Die and IFC. Miara has written on animated comedies including Robot Chicken and SuperMansion, and has developed original projects with NBC, TBS, truTV, and Cartoon Network. Most recently, he co-wrote and directed the scripted audio series Get It To Dutch for iHeart Media, and currently has an animated pilot in development at Fox starring Tim Robinson and Cecily Strong. Miara is an Assistant Professor of Screenwriting at Emerson College.

About A Place To Dance:
Who says only girls can twirl and boys must take the lead on the dance floor?
Celebrate same-gender ballroom dancing with renowned dancer Richard Lamberty as he breaks traditional gender roles, while promoting diversity and inclusivity in dance.
When dancer Richard Lamberty was a child, he loved dancing—especially ballroom dancing. But he was always jealous of the moves female dancers got to do. Intrigued by the female dancers’ different steps, Richard developed the skills to dance either role in order to compete with a male partner in the Gay Games in Europe. He then came back to the United States and cofounded April Follies, the longest-running and largest queer partner dance competition in North America.
Richard Lamberty is a two-time world champion ballroom dancer whose story inspires the LGBTQIA+ community to put on their dance shoes and do what they love.
About Eric Rosswood:
Eric Rosswood&nbsp;(he/him) is an author and commentator on LGBTQ issues, including civil rights, parenting, marriage, and politics. He has led panels on LGBTQ parenting issues for organizations such as the Family Equality Council and the Modern Family Alliance. Eric is the coauthor of Strong, a Stonewall Honor book, and the author of My Uncle's Wedding, and Queer Cheer.

ARTIST BIO: Over several decades, Sheriden has acted under Actor’s Equity Contracts in the nation’s regional theatres. Starting in the 70’s, playing ingénues for the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis to Boston’s Moonbox Productions, garnering a Boston Critics Award for Kimberly in Kimberly Akimbo.
Recently, in film, she played two old ladies. One in Tiffany Paulson’s About Fate and another in Eric Aronson’s Any Day Now about the Gardner Museum heist. It’s now streaming on Amazon Prime.
Sheriden has directed and taught acting at Cornell and Southern Methodist Universities.
Since arriving in Boston, she directed plays and readings for Another Country, Queer Soup Productions, and Boston Playwrights’ Theatre.
As Senior Lecturer Emerita, at Tufts University, she taught a variety of acting courses including Advanced Acting Lab, Shakespeare, Mask, Physical Comedy, and Acting as Career. She directed a dozen plays, concluding with an edited video of Jeffrey Hatcher’s delightfully, silly adaptation of The Government Inspector.

About the Book

About the Authors
Amal El-Mohtar (she/her) is an award-winning author, editor, and critic. Her short story “Seasons of Glass and Iron” won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards and was a finalist for the World Fantasy, Sturgeon, Aurora, and Eugie Foster awards. She is the author of The Honey Month, a collection of poetry and prose written to the taste of twenty-eight different kinds of honey, and contributes criticism to NPR Books and The New York Times. Her fiction has most recently appeared on <a target="_blank" href="https://tor.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Tor.com</a> and Uncanny Magazine, and in anthologies such as The Djinn Falls in Love &amp; Other Stories and The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales. She is presently pursuing a PhD at Carleton University and teaches creative writing at the University of Ottawa. She can be found online at @Tithenai.
Max Gladstone (he/him) is the author of the Hugo-nominated Craft Sequence, which Patrick Rothfuss called “stupefyingly good.” The sixth book, Ruin of Angels, was released this September. Max’s interactive mobile game Choice of the Deathless was nominated for the XYZZY Award, and his critically acclaimed short fiction has appeared on <a target="_blank" href="https://tor.com/" rel="nofollow noopener">Tor.com</a> and in Uncanny Magazine, and in anthologies such as XO Orpheus: Fifty New Myths and The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales. John Crowley described Max as “a true star of twenty first century fantasy.” Max has sung in Carnegie Hall and was once thrown from a horse in Mongolia.

Her vulnerable introspection and brutal lyricism combined with mind-bending sonic sensibilities and a distinct production style immediately fused a bond between her and her loyal fan base. Holliday masterfully guides listeners through moments in time extremely specific to her own life that puts words to collective experiences of the human condition, reaching into places we might not have known existed prior.
“Former cheer captain” isn’t something you always see on the resume of a rising, alternative singer-songwriter. For Charli Adams, who grew up across several small towns in rural Alabama, an outward display of optimism might have been the only way to get by.
Charli Adams was born in a dollar-store town in northern Alabama, the kind of place you might hear Kacey Musgraves sing about. “I didn’t grow up in a musical family, but when I wrote my first song it clicked for me,” she says.”| could be melodramatic about my life in a way l hadn’t in any other form of expression. When I wrote music, I felt like I could say it all. Songwriting is essentially my only outlet to be unfiltered.”
