About What Kind Of Queen?:
A joyous picture book biography of José Sarria, a pioneering activist, drag queen, and the first openly gay candidate to run for public office in the United States.

Once upon a time, there lived a boy named José who dreamed of becoming royalty—and of a queendom where everyone would be treated fairly and with respect.

A child of immigrants from Colombia, José Sarria was born in San Francisco in 1922. With the support of his family, he grew up to discover what it means to be a queen: he fought against evil by serving in WWII, helping to liberate a Nazi concentration camp; he inspired others to be their authentic selves by performing at San Francisco’s Black Cat Café, a haven for artists and activists; and he cared for his community through his LGBTQ+ advocacy work, including the establishment of the Imperial Court System, a global charitable organization that still thrives today.

Sarria led by example, joyfully giving back to his community while challenging the status quo. With a fairy-tale feel and radiant illustrations, this picture book biography celebrates his legacy of seeing the world not as it is but as it could be.

About Cindy Lozito:
Cindy Lozito&nbsp;(she/her) is a mixed Latina illustrator, cartoonist, and muralist based in Philadelphia, originally from Queens, New York. Her murals and artwork have appeared at the World Trade Center and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. When she is not illustrating, you can find Lozito giving her terrier mix belly rubs, singing in her local choir, or drinking too much cold brew.

About The Lesbian Bar Chronicles
Lesbian bars are so much more than a place to get a drink. For over a century, they’ve acted as community posts, political organizing grounds, and sanctuaries. Yet whereas in the 1980s there were an estimated 200 lesbian bars across the US, the current count sits at a few dozen.

In The Lesbian Bar Chronicles, author and co-creator of the hit podcast Cruising Rachel Karp embarks across the country with her wife and best friend to chronicle the stories of the remaining US lesbian bars. Recent narratives have claimed lesbian bars are dying, but Karp’s group finds many of the places they visit to be thriving, their communities sustaining themselves over decades of change and challenges.

Weaving together over 100 hours of immersive interviews with bar owners, staff, and regulars, Karp highlights places like

-Chicago spot Nobody’s Darling, where readers meet “the mayor” Shirley J, who in the 1970s was instrumental in the birth of house music

-Frankie’s in Oklahoma City, where readers attend a “family night” to learn how a lesbian bar can birth a chosen family

-Redz, a Chicana lesbian bar in East LA involved in the precedent setting court case that followed years of arrests for patrons wearing men’s clothing

A heartfelt reclamation of queer history and queer lives, Karp’s narrative examines how these beacons for community and inclusion can teach us to live openly, cultivate connection, and continue to take up space.

About the Author
Rachel Karp is a writer and producer who has worked across podcasts, TV, film, theater, and digital media. The co-creator and producer of the award-winning documentary podcast Cruising, she currently serves as an associate producer on LinkedIn’s editorial team, working on the podcasts Hello Monday and Building One. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theater and English from Skidmore College. She lives in Brooklyn with her partner Jen, in their home which has lovingly been dubbed “the home for wayward gays” by the multitude of queer friends and family members who have stayed there over the years.

We’re excited to add a new competition format to our “City Series”!&nbsp; Join us for a dynamic, skills-focused outdoor parkour competition designed to challenge athletes of all levels while celebrating progression, creativity, and community. This event brings together youth and adult participants to test themselves across a series of thoughtfully designed challenges- from low-impact fundamentals to advanced, coach-level movements. With a structured, multi-stage format and clearly defined goals for each challenge, competitors will have the opportunity to demonstrate precision, control, and adaptability in a supportive, high-energy environment. Spectators- especially families- will get a front-row view of athletes applying what they’ve learned in class in a real, performance-based setting. 
The competition begins with an open “Community Round,” where participants work through a wide variety of challenges at their own pace, followed by 1-2 rounds to whittle down the field and give participants a more focused format.&nbsp; 
With age-based categories that welcome our full community and a transparent point system that rewards both completion and efficiency, the event is accessible to newcomers while still offering depth for experienced practitioners that want to push their limits. Whether you’re aiming to benchmark your skills, prepare for future competitions, or simply enjoy a day of movement outdoors with fun people, this event is a unique opportunity to engage with the parkour community and push your abilities!

The event will connect individuals, families, caregivers, and community members with organizations and resources focused on adult services and support programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about special needs trusts, the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), job placement services, group employment opportunities, day habilitation, Community-Based Day Supports (CBDS), residential services, Adult Foster Care (AFC), and recreational and social programming.

About The Secret World Of Briar Rose

Her YouTube channel, Read With Cindy, has amassed over half a million subscribers and focuses on books, movie reactions, and candid commentary. The Secret World of Briar Rose is her debut novel.

About the Speaker
Aislinn Brophy (she/they) is an actor, writer, and the author of Spells To Forget Us, How to Succeed in Witchcraft, and the forthcoming The Divinity Thieves (Spring 2027). She was born and raised in South Florida, but made her way up to the frigid northeast for college. Their hobbies include pawning off their baking on anybody nearby, doing funny voices, and dismantling the patriarchy. Aislinn has a degree in Theater, Dance &amp; Media, and her experiences as a performer consistently wiggle their way into her writing. In all aspects of her work as an artist, she is passionate about exploring identity and social justice issues.

<h3>SomerStreets Carnaval 2026 Brings Color, Culture, and Community to East Somerville</h3>
The City of Somerville and East Somerville Main Streets invite you to join us for SomerStreets Carnaval 2026, taking place on Sunday, June 7th, from 2:00–6:00 PM along Broadway, from Pennsylvania Avenue to McGrath Highway. (Rain date: June 14th.)
East Somerville is more than a neighborhood; it’s a vibrant mix of cultures, colors, and stories. From its murals to its restaurants, every corner reflects the energy of a community that is multicultural, multilingual, creative, hardworking, and deeply welcoming.
Carnaval is a celebration of that spirit. The event transforms Broadway into an open-air festival where community, culture, and creativity come alive.
Starting at 2:00 PM, the streets will fill with music, movement, and rhythm, kicking off with an electrifying Brazilian-style opening featuring Grooveristy and Samba Viva. The lineup continues with dynamic performances by Pedro Secco &amp; Friends, Trio Latino, Mambiseros, and more, bringing sounds and traditions from across the globe to one stage. Join us this year for the Opening Party at 2:30 PM on the Community Stage! Expect great music, vibrant performances, and nonstop energy to kick off Carnaval the right way.&nbsp;
Visitors can also explore a rich selection of local flavors from some of East Somerville’s beloved restaurants, including Gauchão Brazilian Cuisine, Rei da Picanha, Rincón Mexicano, Taqueria Montecristo, Michette, and many others.
Beyond the stage and the food, Carnaval offers fun for all ages, with activities like a dunk tank, bounce houses, games, and interactive community experiences throughout the event. 16 blocks of pure joy and energy!&nbsp;

Carnaval highlights the heart of the East Somerville Business District, bringing together neighbors, local businesses, and visitors through live music, food, and family-friendly activities inspired by cultures from around the world. 
SomerStreets: Carnaval is co-produced by East Somerville Main Streets and the Somerville Arts Council. The festival will take place on Sunday, June 7, from 2–6 p.m. (Severe weather date: Sunday, June 14) and will&nbsp;stretch along Broadway, from McGrath Highway to Pennsylvania Avenue, creating a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.

Celebrating over 90 years of excellence in fashion education, The School of Fashion Design is the only educational institution in New England dedicated exclusively to the study of fashion design. SFD provides students with a solid foundation in apparel design and construction, and the skills required for a successful career in fashion. Our technical Certificate program is taught by experts in the field of fashion design. Students may take courses toward the Certificate or on a class-by-class basis to fill professional education interests.
