Case of the Missing Agent: Are Somerville Veterans Getting the Runaround?

Local veterans say they can't file for benefits locally, and officials won't stay if the city's veterans' agent has been removed.

Somerville veterans are facing frustrating difficulties and unanswered questions over dealing with the city when it comes to benefits and services.

Local veterans have been unable to file claims in Somerville because of the lack of a veterans’ agent, according to a Wicked Local report. Christian Kulikoski, who was placed in that position earlier this year, was let go last week, Robert Hardy, post commander for Davis Square’s VFW, told Wicked Local.

Somerville officials, however, have refused to comment on Kulikoski’s possible removal, claiming it’s a personnel matter, the report stated. A spokesman for the mayor’s office did tell Wicked Local that Kulikoski was still in charge of the Somerville’s veterans’ services department.

State law requires communities to have veterans’ agent on staff to handle benefit claims and other matters. Kulikoski’s absence from that post has meant that Somerville veterans have had to go to the veterans’ office in Boston to deal with these matters, the report stated.
