Court Rules Lawsuit Challenging Wynn's Gambling License May Proceed

The suit alleges the Gaming Commission violated open meeting laws during deliberations for the license.

EVERETT, MA – A lawsuit challenging Wynn's gambling license for its Everett resort may proceed, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled Friday.

According to an Associated Press report, the SJC ruled a lower court should determine whether or not the Gaming Commission violated the open meetings law during deliberations. The commission ultimately awarded the license to Wynn over Mohegan Sun.

In a statement to the AP, the Gaming Commission denied any wrongdoing, and said it was “comprehensive, fair and highly transparent” and will be “vigorously” defended in court.

“The recent decision has no impact on our construction," Michael Weaver, senior vice president of Marketing and Communications, said in a statement. "We are on schedule and pleased with our construction progress. We look forward to opening June 2019.”

A violation of the open meetings law could void actions taken at those meetings or result in civil penalties or other punishment.
