'Total Loss': 7 Hospitalized, a Dozen Displaced by Somerville 3-Alarm Fire

The blaze tore through a home on Appleton Street. Those hospitalized all suffered relatively minor injuries, Chief Sullivan said.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A three-alarm fire that tore through a Somerville home early Friday morning left about a dozen displaced and seven in the hospital, Somerville Fire Chief Patrick Sullivan said.

Sullivan described the home as a "total loss" following the blaze.

The fire was first reported around 2:10 a.m. on the unit block of Appleton Street. Crews arrived to find the rear porches completely engulfed in flames and the fire spreading to the third floor.

Sullivan said first responders received reports of people who had jumped from the windows prior to the fire department's arrival.

Those hospitalized all suffered relatively minor injuries, Sullivan said.

Crews from nearby Cambridge and Chelsea assisted in curtailing the blaze, which was brought under control around 4:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
