Art opening - "Elements & Artifacts" photography show

Art Opening in Conjunction with Midnight Madness

"Elements & Artifacts", a whimsical and poignant collection of images by T.L.Litt, will be shown in the gallery space at the office of Thalia Tringo Real Estate, 128 Willow Ave., Somerville, from November 28, 2011 - January 28, 2012.  The opening reception will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, December 1st.  Hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, and other beverages will be served.
In "Elements & Artifacts", T.L. Litt documents seemingly mundane scenes with great insight and humor. Marrying her current profession as a home inspector with her former vocation and continued passion as a photographer, Ms. Litt brings her keen eye to images both familiar and foreign in that most personal of spaces, our homes. These images fall into two categories:  the elements that make up the structure of the home and the artifacts that inform us about its inhabitants. Through Litt's lens, inanimate objects communicate with the viewer. She conveys the odd beauty of peeling layers of wallpaper or a crumbling chimney flue; a laundry basket of shoe forms becomes an architectural achievement; decaying plaster and lathe evoke a sense of mystery and nostalgia. Litt captures tableau throughout the house, from the mundane to the whimsical to the perverse, giving us insight into the history of the home and the character of the people who dwell within it. Nothing, it seems, is without meaning or commentary. With compassion and humor, Litt skillfully reframes our view of our surroundings, our lives, and ourselves.
T.L. Litt studied photojournalism at The New England School of Photography, graduating with honors, but her real world training began in earnest on the streets of New York City in the 1980s, documenting the many social and political tug of wars in the city and the nation. Since then,Ms. Litt's photographs have appeared in dozens of publications, including Vanity Fair, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Utne Reader, and The Advocate. She is also honored to have several photographs included in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. In 2008, Ms. Litt embarked on a second career, training and earning a license as a professional home inspector. It wasn't long before her eye was drawn to the raw and honest tableau of human life exposed within the homes she inspected. While inspecting structure and systems, compelled by an artist's drive to capture, Ms. Litt doesn't fail to miss the subtleties.
