Come find out what makes Union Square so eclectic and appealing! Delve into the history of Somerville's oldest and largest commercial district to understand the ingredients for its economic rebirth. Architectural historian Ed Gordon, known for his colorful and entertaining walking tours throughout the Boston area, will highlight the Square's most significant commercial buildings and why. Explore its diverse architectural styles, from a small, 1845 Greek Revival house converted to a convenience store, to grand Queen Anne storefronts, and two classic gas stations built in the early 1900's on opposite ends of the Square. Learn about future opportunities through Union Square Main Street, adaptive re-use of buildings, historic districting, and the Green Line Extension.
The tour will begin at the plaza in front of 70 Union Square, the City's former Police Station, and end nearby for a sampling of cuisine at a local restaurant.
RSVP's appreciated, but not required. Due to support from the ArtsUnion Project and the Massacusetts Cultural Council, John and Abigail Adams Grant, and the City of Somerville/CDBG, there is no charge for the tour.
