Improvisational Woodcut and Beyond…A workshop Series at ABRAZOS PRESS with Annie Silverman, 11 Miller St., Somerville, MA  off Beacon St,  behind Petsi’s Pies and next to STAR MARKET Easy Access to Porter Sq, T6.

Sessions on alternate Monday Evenings from January 24-April 4, 6-9:30 pm.

All levels of experience are welcome (class is limited to 5).

Fee: $300.00 Experiment with nontraditional woodcut printmaking techniques that yield contemporary, express results.  Building a vocabulary of carved and incised marks on wood, students will make a set of plates that can be used alone, in conjunction with one another, as well as with other prints. There is a dialogue between carving and printing, with the conversation turning spicy when multiple layers of colored ink in varying degrees of transparency are introduced and the improvisation begins. This is a unique way to work with woodblock that can have the immediacy of collage, yet with the possibility of multiples and work within a series for which printmaking is ideal. The class also covers: tool care and sharpening, work with stencils and masks and chine colle’ .For continuing students, advanced carving techniques, pronto plates, possible shaped woodcut plates and individual projects. 

REGISTRATION: Due to the lateness of this announcement (snow shoveling, and more snow shoveling) please email or call to reserve a place and full payment will be due at the first class. New Students will be emailed a materials list, And there will be materials available at the first class.

 Annie Silverman is a printmaker and teacher who has been working experimentally with relief printmaking for 20 years. Her prints and unique books have been collected and exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently in Denmark and Cuba. She has been teaching at Mass College of Art for over 20 years and has taught at Penland, Bennington College, Pyramid Atlantic, and at Mixit Studios.  Annie recently returned from 2 summer teaching and art making residencies in Ireland and Denmark.  She had a one person exhibition at the Grafiks Galleri in Næstved,Denmark Contact:  617-519-8970Anniesil@earthlink.net,www.anniesilverman.biz (under renovation) www.ABRAZOSPress.com
