Join the discussion on living in shared housing on Wed., June 15, 5:45-7:30PM, at the next Making Your Home Work for the Long Run workshop. Sponsors are Staying Put Working Group, Somerville Cambridge Elder Services, Cambridge Council on Aging, Somerville Council on Aging, and SCM Door to Door Transportation.
The event is free, wheelchair accessible and refreshments will be served.
Sharing space with others and having a private area of ones own is not a new idea. Families, students, religious orders, military personnel, are just some groups who live under a common roof. Most choose to do so in order to save on living expenses. Just as often, people cite the benefits social stimulation and connection to the community, to share maintenance and upkeep, and to help house a friend or family member.
Shared living situations are unique and no two situations are alike. It is adaptable to any scale, from a single family to a multi unit building, and even a cluster of buildings. There are rental as well as ownership opportunities.
It's also not confined to certain age groups; in fact, people contemplating 'aging in community' may benefit greatly from having a shared situation. Families may have a space to convert to a 'granny apartment' for an older relative or friend. If you know people who might fit this category, please tell them about this event.
Panelists will cover the basics of home sharing, coops, joint family, co-housing and most important of all, understanding your own needs in deciding what option makes sense for you. Panelists will share their experiences through stories about how they chose their settings, and how it has worked out.
Discussions in small groups will focus on the questions to ask when starting or joining a shared housing arrangement, such as--
What's important to you in relation to living with others? What are your needs?
What are the pros and cons of different approaches?
What are the financial, zoning, or contractual options?
Reserve by calling 617 628-2601, ext 601, or email Susann at stayingput@eldercare.org
