Proceeds to benefit Books of Hope:
BOOKS OF HOPE is a Somerville-based, literacy empowerment program that develops youth into book authors. Since 1999, the program has trained hundreds of urban and immigrant youth in creative writing, spoken word performance, publishing, and entrepreneurship. Youth have written over 140 books of poetry, fiction, memoirs, and plays that are distributed through performances, festivals, libraries, and bookstores. Last year, BOH teens penned 8 books of poetry, 3 novels, and one anthology.
Monies raised will go to publishing this year’s books, set for release in May. BOH serves youth, ages 13-25, who come from low-income neighborhoods. It provides them with a youth writers’ community where they can share their stories, empower their voices, and develop their reading and writing abilities. BOH is a collaborative project of the Mystic Learning Center and Somerville Arts Council.
