Hello Everyone!
My name is Elias Estabrook, and I was profiled in a "Whiz Kid" article that was published on the Patch website in June. The "gap year" that I will be embarking on (which is mentioned in the article) is quickly approaching; I will be leaving on August 15th to the training institute in San Francisco! From there I will fly to Senegal, to begin my 7 months of immersion and service.
This event serves as a fundraiser for the scholarship fund of Global Citizen Year (the non-profit I will be traveling with) AND as a kick-off event for my journey to abroad. In the coming months you will be able to follow my experience, as I interact, work, and learn in my Senegalese host- community through a blog on the Patch website; coming to this community event will help to jumpstart the cross-cultural, cross-continental connections and exchange that I hope to build. By following my blog you will be joining a movement to build greater understanding of cultural difference and issues such as poverty in our world.

The night will include a musical performance by Jeffrey Douyon (vocals) and Adam Kaminski (guitar) -- talented friends of mine -- a selection of ethnic food, presentations about Senegal (possibly including a film about hip hop and political movements in the country) and my choice to take a gap year, and great atmosphere!
All proceeds will go to the Fellows' Fund, the scholarship fund of the nonprofit organization Global Citizen Year. This fund makes this opportunity accessible to an increasingly diverse (ethnically and socio-economically) group of young leaders who want to have a real world experience and want to touch the lives of people around the world. Without this fund I wouldn't be part of the program this coming year, so our community's support of this organization and its mission is valuable! Global Citizen Year is a 501 (c)(3), thus all donations are tax-deductible.
