From the Somerville Public Library's events calendar:
Join for a writing workshop for kids ages 9-12! Children will learn how to get ideas for stories, and will do several journal exercises for writing. They will be able to read aloud from their own mini stories on the theme of winter. Mini stories will include 6-word short stories and "perfect paragraph" stories. They will leave with their own notebooks and tips on how to use them to be a writer every day.
Regina Hansen, PhD, teaches writing at Boston University and has also taught writing to at risk teenagers in the John Hancock/Boston Police Summer of Opportunity program. She is the 2011 recipient of the Somerville Arts Council Artist Fellowship in literature and has taught writing to 6-11 year-olds in a connection with that grant. She has also received the Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Grant for Fiction and was an honored writer at the PEN New England Children's Book Caucus Discovery Evening. Her article on vampires and disease was recently published the children's history magazine Calliope and she has two more articles coming in Calliope's July issue. She has also published scholarly books and articles, and is a Girl Scout leader.
This program is limited to 12 kids. Tickets will be distributed in the children’s room one hour prior to beginning of each session, if needed. Regina will also teach writing workshops during February and April school vacation weeks.
