The Somerville Arts Council’s Arts Union and  invite all to take part in a day of making “epic" snow art on Saturday (1-3 p.m.) in Union Square. The city will be providing a giant pile of snow. Gather, sculpt and maybe throw it around a little. Artistes of all ages are asked to bring shovels and carving tools and Cantina La Mexicana will be provide the Mexican hot chocolate. Glide into the weekend at Friday and Saturday free public skates at Veterans Memorial Ice Rink. This weekend you can take to the ice Friday 6-7:50 p.m. and Saturday 5-6:50 p.m. It’s free (unless you need a $6 skate rental). Details . Always call first; the rink’s schedule seems to change more often than the weather.

Gather to Commemorate the Haitian Earthquake 

One year ago on Jan. 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake cost an estimated 300,000 people in Haiti their lives, and today more than one million displaced persons remain homeless. In Somerville, the invites all to remember those lost, honor all who offered support and celebrate Haiti’s future. The event, originally scheduled for Wednesday will now be held Friday Jan. 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the High School. It’s free. Details .

Check out indie bands—and radical cheerleaders--for a good cause

Four indie bands and the Sass Attack Radical Cheerleaders bring the party to P.A.’s Lounge Saturday (8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m.) all in support of City Life Vida Urbana, a grassroots organization in Jamaica Plain with a focus on affordable housing and tenant's rights. Bands include Hot Molasses of Somerville, The Tin Thistles (self-dubbed “Somerville face melters’), Tad Overbaugh and The Late Arrivals and Fashion Snake. $10 cover. Details .
